Inertia
A play by Trudy KalvynaitÄ—
Coming April 2025
Inertia explores the complexity of grief and healing through language, poetry, and dance. Set in the early 90s post the fall of the Soviet Union in Eastern Europe, Inertia follows the journey of Frida - a survivor.

She immerses into a journey of grief, heightened by the loss of her abusive husband, her son, motherhood, her problematic childhood, and her conflict with herself. The play explores significant themes of generational trauma, patriarchal oppression and freedom.
"As the Scottish theatre scene broadens its narratives, I see Soviet Union trauma as still unexplored, and Inertia as the ideal candidate to bring these specific experiences to light."
Developed from personal stories of Trudy's grandmother under the Soviet thumb, Inertia documents experiences of oppression, entrapment and misogyny. It directly addresses generational trauma, persistent impacts of communist patriarchy, and grief-driven mental health crises. Frida’s struggle and resentment of her own pain highlights internalised mental health stigma still present in many post-Soviet states today.

The slow-blooming queer relationship between Frida and her best friend Marta is an act of genuine rebellion against conformity, which emerges as Frida heals and faces the effects of her trauma. This narrative serves as a love letter to the underground queer communities in post-Soviet life today, who are only now finding the courage to come out.
